Background

In Japan, following the opening of FabLab Kamakura and FabLab Tsukuba in 2011, and FabLab Shibuya in 2012, FabLabs began to emerge one after another in the Kanto region.

In response, a group of volunteers in the Kansai region launched a discussion platform called FabFoo Kansai in January 2012 with the shared goal of "bringing a FabLab to Kansai." Through monthly face-to-face meetings and exchanges in a public Facebook group, the members discussed how to run a FabLab, where to establish it, and what equipment to install. Nearly all of this information was shared openly, and the planning process moved forward in an open and flexible manner.

A turning point came in September 2012, when a concrete opportunity for establishing a physical space emerged. FabFoo Kansai was invited to present its activities at DESIGNEAST 03, held at the former Namura Shipyard site in Kitakagaya, Suminoe Ward, Osaka City. Thanks to the involvement of new partners who came together at the event, the project gained momentum.

At the beginning of 2013, we officially launched FabLab Kitakagaya, setting up our base in the shared studio Co-op Kitakagaya, located in the same Kitakagaya area. Since then, we have been developing various activities as a community-based manufacturing hub.
